Hang: Manifest Destiny of the Longboard Cult Surfing Instructional DVD Video
Hang is a verb; it's a noun;
it's a transitive state of being; it's an attitude, a suspension of
gravity and disbelief. In surfing, 'hanging' means putting ten toes over
the nose in the supreme act of finely honed edgework, the Hang Ten. To
hang ten means to hang your hide out in full screaming trim down-the-line
commitment with no leash and no net. It's a tightrope jig over the abyss
dancing stylishly on the edge of disaster. Hang is also an investigation
into the Manifest Destiny of the Longboard Cult. Featuring the elite of
modern day longboarding, Hang is a two-year, round-the-globe expedition
that pays homage to six modern Meccas of state-of-the-art longboarding.
Shot on location in Hawaii, Samoa, Australia, Indonesia, Costa Rica and
California, Hang offers exciting new footage and on-the-beach interviews
with over fifty longboard masters of all ages who attempt to explain why
the world is divided between those who can hang and those who can't.
Surfers profiled include: Bonga Perkins, Dino Miranda, Belinda Baggs, John
Peck, Robert August, Beau Young, Andrew LoGreco, Joel Tudor and more.
There is an in-depth chapter featuring the new breed and a fun legends
trip to the exotic Mentawai Islands with Melvin Pu 'u, Titus Kinimaka,
Dave Kalama and Jeff Hakman. Presented in: Anamorphic Widescreen 1.78:1
(16x9) Enhanced for Widescreen TV (will appear letterboxed on standard

Greats of Women's Surfing: Surfer's Journal Biography Instructional DVD Video
Female surfers played a vital role in the sport's Polynesian pre-history.
At times, women actually outnumbered their male counterparts at Hawaiian
breaks. The situation changed in the 20th century and female surfers found
their influence reduced - for the most part - to decoration and novelty.
Even though long-standing competitions like the Makaha International
featured a women's division, participants were few and the intensity of
the competition paled in comparison with the men. The first crack in this
picture appeared in the 1967 when the Western Surfing Association created
a new 4A division for "professionally-oriented super stars." A precursor
of today's elite world tour, the women's division showcased child star
Margo Godfrey, who carved her way straight through to the World Title at
age 15 on the way to becoming one of the greatest surfing champions ever.
Margo set the stage for future generations of women surfers to follow.
Names like Rell Sunn, Jericho Poppler, and Lynn Boyer became standard
fixtures in the surfing press. Today, through the efforts of contemporary
surfers Lisa Andersen, Rochelle Ballard, Layne Beachley, and Keala
Kenneally, women are reclaiming their rightful place in elite lineups the
world over. The movement is most palpable in the freesurfing realm, and
one of the 21st century's most obvious surfing trends is the explosion of
females at beaches everywhere. Explore all of this history in this edition
of The Surfer's Journal. 62 mins. (2007) DVD-Region 1.

Curren & Slater: Surfer's Journal Biography Instructional DVD Video
Tom Curren and Kelly Slater are
surfing's most important figures in the last 20 years. Both surfers
dominated their eras competitively: Tom in the '80s; Kelly in the '90s.
Both exhibited innate natural ability and wave knowledge, and between the
two of them, they amassed an unprecedented nine world titles. In so doing,
Curren, then Slater, lifted American professional surfing to peak from the
self-doubting doldrums imposed by the brassy Australian and South African
dominance in the 1970s. As World Champion, Curren was a shy and elusive
yet hugely influential figure who let his brilliant wave riding do the
talking. In contrast, while Slater's surfing defined a new era, on land he
transcended the surf scene to become a pop culture icon on magazine covers
and the world's most-watched TV series, "Baywatch." This volume of the
Surfer's Journal Biographies reviews both surfer's careers with intimate
perspectives that help us understand who they really are as human beings
as well as great wave riders. In addition to the full length documentary
about the lives of Curren and Slater, the DVD contains contemporary
surfing segments as an added bonus. There is a never before seen Curren
segment with Tom ripping La Fontania in France. Showing that his smooth
and graceful style is still intact, Curren demonstrates the skills that
make him one of the most popular surfers of all time. Edited to the song
"Supernatural" by Kevin Sandbloom, Curren fans will be mesmerized by his
surfing. The Kelly Slater bonus segment is a must see! Slater surfing huge
tow-in waves in France and tearing it up at Le Piste, a classic French
beach break. Kelly proves that a break from the world tour has done
nothing to hurt his aggressive surfing style. Accompanied by Ozomatli's "Superbowl
Sundae", this hip soundtrack and Kelly's powerful aerial attack will leave
you craving a surf session yourself! 62 mins. (2007) DVD-Region 1.
